Weekly Report 18/04/2017

Club Sailing

Easter Saturday saw two early evening races run for the first time by James, ably assisted by Peter. Four Ospreys and a Comet competed over a triangular course with up wind start out to sea. The north westerly provided an upwind leg in, towards first point, followed by a tightish reach across towards St Catherines then a broader reach back to the start. In the first race Ted/Lucas in their Osprey took a slight lead on the first beat with Jaime/Steve and Mike/Deanna breathing down their necks. Hitting the leeward mark didn`t help their cause, the penalty turn enabling the others to close right up, then Jaime/Steve assumed the lead upwind, only to lose it again on the next lap. Restored to the lead Ted/Lucas then chose to fly their spinnaker on the tight reach believing the nasty gusts had eased. Wrong choice! Gusts at the end of the leg saw them overpowered and hitting the gybe mark this time. Another penalty turn and the two leaders were neck and neck, Ted/Lucas taking the win by a small distance. In the second race Jaime/Steve sailed away; two fast beats followed by good spinnaker work established a substantial lead and a deserved win. Ted/Lucas were second John in the Comet third, then Richard/Alistair, Mike/Deanna having retired.

Come and try

The Club will be taking part in the RYA “Push the Boat Out” scheme again this year, offering anyone who wants a go at sailing to have a go in club boats with experienced helms. The event will be on Sunday 21st May; if you would like to have a go please contact Ted Lewis on This email address is being protected from spambots. Junior training.

The conditions were much improved last Wednesday;  the tide was  in, sea flat and wind blowing force 2-4 from the west. All the beginners managed to do their first solo sail in Optimists and mastered the art of turning so that they all came back! The stage 3 group in Teras also performed well and had not forgotten their skills learnt last season. The Stage 4 group were introduced to double handed sailing in Fevas. We now have 4 Fevas including the 2 new boats purchased recently. The racing group was given instruction on starts, best place to be on the line etc and we look forward to some regular racing for this group. Many thanks to all the Instructors and parents who help during these sessions.  At least 15 people help to make these training nights possible.

The evening finished with the usual BBQ food in the Club.
