Club Sailing

It was windy on Saturday for the two scheduled races in the club`s summer series run by Jon Morris. A triangular course with up wind start was set, the windward mark off St Catherines, the gybe at the Eastern and Start line off Monkstone. In the first race the RS400 of Dan/Conor pulled off a port flyer but then continued heading inshore. The Ospreys went out towards Caldey and it was Ted/Lucas who reached the windward mark first. Those two boats enjoyed a close tussle for the top spot throughout the race, the RS400 being faster downwind but the Osprey making up upwind. However at the last gybe things did not go well in the Osprey ending on its side while the RS400 sailed past laughing, as did several others!  In the end Jon in the Phantom took the race from Dan/Conor then Peter/Igor in the Scorpion.

A second race followed immediately. This time the Osprey of Ted/Lucas stayed upright and they took the win from Peter, then Jon. The fleet of ten boats who took to the water, the best for some time, enjoyed an exhilarating evening with wind and sunshine, before retiring to rehydrate!

Tuesday evenings race took place in grey and gloomy conditions with a light south westerly blowing. Seven boats competed, four Ospreys, a Scorpion, an RS200 and a Phantom. The outgoing tide caused three of the fleet to be over the line at the start, and they had to re start. The others headed off to the windward mark off St Catherines, reached first by Ted/Lucas with the others in hot pursuit. Mike/Deanna were hot on the heels of the leaders until a port/starboard incident saw them doing penalty turns. Further down the fleet the Phantom and Scorpion were keeping up well with the faster boats, as was the RS200, helmed this season by Jas Stubbs as part of her GCSE studies. In the end it was the Scorpion who prevailed, taking the win on corrected time from the Osprey of Ted/Lucas, then Jon in the Phantom, recovering well from starting too soon!

Junior training.

Although the tide was out otherwise conditions were perfect for sail training especially for the beginners which at one time had 8 optimists on the water and upright!  Most are now nearing the end of the Stage one course and were able to improve their reaching and tacking.

The Stage 3 and 4 groups are also progressing well although we need to increase the numbers in the racing group.  Again many thanks to all who help and the backup team organising the BBQ.

Cruiser racing.

There was no race last weekend due to the Come and try event.  Next race is tomorrow Sat at 18.00.  Hope for a good turnout.

Come and Try.

Last Sunday`s event went well although with a slightly lower turnout than we would have liked. Those who came were taken out in dinghies with experienced helms in the morning when the wind was at its strongest. The novices seemed to enjoy the physicality of it, particularly trapezing upwind on the Osprey. The tide came in lunch time enabling cruisers to launch, and all participants were able to spend a pleasant few hours out in the bay towards Caldey and back.
