Weekly Report 27/10/2017

Club Sailing

Sunday`s two races were sailed in a blustery force 4-5 from a chilly northerly direction but the sun was shining and 5 enthusiastic boats came out to play. Dan and Carwyn were both getting to grips with their new Ospreys and new crews, chasing the experienced teams of Peter and Igor, Mike and Deanna, Ted and Lucas. Race 1 saw a port hand triangular course set and off they all went under the watchful eyes of Sharon and Ioan Thompson and Jo Musson who had the individual recall flag handy to keep the fleet in order, but fortunately this was not needed and the race started cleanly first time.

Dan and Connor in their Osprey port tacked the fleet at the start, and reached the windward mark just ahead of Ted/Lucas. A large gust on the bare off caught them out trying to launch the spinnaker, and they stopped for a swim. Ted/Lucas assumed the lead which they kept for a lap but then dropped their spinnaker into the sea in front of the boat and ran over it. Not fast! Mike/Deanna took over the lead and kept it to the end, but not far enough ahead of Peter/Igor in the Scorpion who took the win on corrected time, from Mike/Deanna then Ted/Lucas.
The second race got underway after a quick adjustment being made to the gybe mark. All 5 boats had a close start with Dan opting for another port hand flyer just making it across the fleet. This time Ted/Lucas reached the windward mark first and  kept the lead to the end despite hitting three marks on the way and performing three 360 penalties. Again the gusty conditions resulted in the odd bath for some and some fast enjoyable reaches. The final results were Peter and Igor first, Ted and Lucas second, Dan and Connor third, Mike and Deanna fourth and Carwyn and Jamie 5th. Well done to everyone out there; it was fun racing to watch.
Finally it has to be mentioned that Sharon Thompson has now completed her PB2 and Ioan, post racing, has now completed his AI training so a special well done to both of them. Racing next week starts at 11am so dust off your dry suits and we'll see you out there.
