Enterprise 2008 National Championships

Sailed under the burgee of Tenby Sailing Club 9 – 15 August 2008

Report by Paula Southworth; results by Bob Southworth

Arrival

The Enterprise Fleet were given a very warm welcome at Tenby S.C., at the briefing, held in the sailing club on Saturday Evening. This followed a very damp registration and scrutineering day, where competitors, scrutineers and sheets were suitably damp!

Day 1: Sunday 10th August

The weather was to continue to play its part as Day 1, the Practice Race and Race 1, had to be abandoned on Sunday.

Day 2: Monday 11th August

Day 2, Monday, was still not attractive. The fleet competed in a gusty Force 4 with gusts that gave competitors some very 'tricky' sailing conditions. Despite the weather conditions, which can only be described as 'challenging', Race 1, 2 and 3 were completed. The fleet will need to relax and recuperate in preparation for another round of problematic weather conditions on Tuesday and Wednesday, if the forecast is to be believed.

Race 1

                    1st     23219 Russell Short & Kate Fry
                    2nd     20518 Ian Southworth & Jackie Barker
                    3rd     23089 Jon Woodward & Alex Halliwell
                    4th     19876 Alan Johnson & Matt Johnson

Race 2

                    1st     22652 Jeremy Stephens & Tim Hartley
                    2nd     23127 Tim Sadler & Richard Sault
                    3rd     23219 Russell Short & Kate Fry
                    4th     20518 Ian Southworth & Jackie Barker

Race 3

                    1st     23170 Nick Craig & Toby Lewis
                    2nd     22652 Jeremy Stephens & Tim Hartley
                    3rd     23127 Tim Sadler & Richard Sault
                    4th     23219 Russell Short & Kate Fry

Day 3: Tuesday 12th August

Race 4 was sailed in a Force 1 – 3 with a fluky last beat. Race 5 was sailed in a Force 2 – 4 and at one point it reached Force 5. The wind shifted in between races which meant the course had to be re-laid twice.

Race 4

                    1st     23051 Tom Atkin & Claire Houghton
                    2nd     22344 Mike Birch & Verity Birch
                    3rd     22272 Charles Adam & Hanna Adams
                    4th     23087 Richard Adams & Martin Weatherstone

Race 5

                    1st     22652 Jeremy Stephens & Tim Hartley
                    2nd     23170 Nick Craig & Toby Lewis
                    3rd     23127 Tim Sadler & Richard Sault
                    4th     23089 Jon Woodward & Alex Halliwell

Day 4: Wednesday 13th August

Racing was cancelled due to severe gale weather warning – time for competitors to relax and enjoy leisure time in and around Tenby.

There was no report after Day 5 as the results were provisional, awaiting the outcome of a Protest.

Day 5: Thursday 14th August

It was necessary, although tiring for the competitors, to fit 3 races into the programme, due to the fact that racing was cancelled on Day 4 because of gale warnings. The sailing started in a Force 1 – 2 variable south westerly, which strengthened to a Force 3 to 4 by the end of Race 8. The results from these races provided a very interesting overall score board with just one point between first and second boat and four points between 2nd and 3rd. No clear winner at this point and all to sail for in the final race on Day 6.

Race 6

                    1st     23165 Tony Woods & Sam Woods
                    2nd     23087 Richard Adams & Martin Weatherstone
                    3rd     2303 Peter Lawson & Jack Lawson
                    4th     22344 Mike Birch & Verity Birch

Race 7

                    1st     19876 Alan Johnson & Matt Johnson
                    2nd     23170 Nick Craig & Toby Lewis

                    4th     23051 Ton Atkin & Claire Houghton

Race 8

                    1st     19876 Alan Johnson & Matt Johnson
                    2nd     23015 Nick Jackson & Tom Key
                    3rd     23170 Nick Craig & Toby Lewis
                    4th     23089 Jon Woodward & Alex Halliwell

                    4th     23170 Nick Craig & Toby Lewis (47)
                    5th     23089 Jon Woodward & Alex Halliwell (48)
                    6th     23219 Russell Short & Kate Fry (51)

Day 6: Friday 15th August

This was the final race in the Championship and sailed in good conditions, the best for the Championship, in a Force 3 – sometimes 4.

Race 9

                    1st     23170 Nick Craig & Toby Lewis
                    2nd     22652 Jeremy Stephens & Tim Hartley
                    3rd     23127 Tim Sadler & Richard Sault
                    4th     23087 Richard Adams & Martin Weatherstone

Prizegiving

The prizegiving was held in Tenby Sailing Club and the prizes were presented by Julia Dashfield, the Commodore Mark Dashfield's wife. The evening was opened by our Commodore Peter Dolling who made a special point of thanking the hosts, Tenby S.C., for a well organised and enjoyable event – special thanks to Blake Shaw & Mark Dashfield and his team, the galley, bar staff and not forgetting a very 'no nonsense' beach master who definitely kept the fleet in order! Peter also extended thanks to his own Enterprise team.

The overall final results can be seen by clicking here.
