A Picture of Old Tenby Harbour before 1797.

This picture is from a photograph of an undated drawing by an unknown artist, and is thought to show Tenby Harbour and Castle Hill after 1740 but before 1797.

Look for the following features:

  • Near the centre of the picture is the square Whitsand Gate Tower over the road from the town to Laston and Castle Hill.

  • There is a slip leading from the harbour to the pier.

  • There is a quay gate.

  • There is a limekiln at the bottom of Quay Hill (Penniless Cove Hill).

  • There is an old road from the harbour leading to a subway into St. Julian Street.

  • Part of the Sluice Wall is shown, and reflections can be seen in the water contained in the basin. This end of the sluice basin was later filled in to form the South Wharf.
