Last weekend proved to be a very busy one for the club. A large turnout of a wide variety of dinghies ensured the success of the club's annual regatta which incorporated the county regatta. Saturday's programme was intense with two back-to-back races and an evening pursuit race. The conditions were good with the asymmetric class adopting the 'sausage' course and the non-asymmetric class adopting the more traditional triangular course; When the results of both races were compiled only a few seconds separated the top three. The results of these two races follow: Asymmetric class: 1. David Edwards and Chris Mackay in a 49er; joint 2. Steve Stubbs and Daniel Jackson RS700s; 4. David Evans and Ricky in a 29er; 5. Jerry Wales in a RS700. It is pleasing to note that local sailors were very well placed, namely Chris Mackay, Steve Stubbs and Dan Jackson. Considering the standard of entry, this is no mean feat. Non-asymmetric class: joint 1. Mike Stare and Deanna Morton in a Redwing, Robert Dangerfield in a Tasar; 3. Bill Dowell and Nan D'Ortez in a Redwing; 4. Peter David and Andy Tulk in a Fireball; 5. Rolly Squibbs and Alex MacDonald in a Redwing. Again local sailors are prominent in the top places, namely Mike Stace and Deanna Morton, Bill Dowell and Nan D'Ortez and Rolly Squibbs and Alex McDonald. Again no mean feat considering the standard and size of the opposition. Other prizes and trophies were up for grabs. There follows a summary: 1st Laser 4000 - Gareth and Janet Hill; equal 1st RS700 - Dan Jackson and Steve Stubbs; 1st Redwing - Cadwalleder Galleon to Mike Stace and Deanna Morton; 1st Redwing (overall) - Mike Stace and Denna Morton; 1st Laser - Paul Griffiths; 1st under 18 - Angelo Ferric in a Topper, who received the Colonel Howells Trophy. The evening's racing took the form of a pursuit race based on handicap where dinghies of higher handicaps start ahead of the lower handicaps. Theoretically all the boats should finish at the same time, but rarely do. The final position were determined after a set time and were: 1. Steve Stubbs in a RS700; 2. Dave Edwards and Chris Mackay in a 49er; 3. Rolly Squibbs and Alex MacDonald in a Redwing; 4. Neal Peacock in a RS400; 5. Gordon Evans and Ruth Evans in a RS400. Again local sailors are prominent in the top placings. Sunday's racing was the traditional anti-clockwise soire around Caldey Island. Unfortunately, conditions early on were such that the cruiser fraternity decided not to participate. However, conditions improved sufficiently for the dinghy fleet to circumnavigate the island in relative safety. The start at 11.30 from the harbour was a magnificent spectacle with all boats away safely. The fleet soon spread out with the asymmetric fleet taking the lead. With the condition round the back of the island on the choppy side and winds fairly light, it was unlikely a record time was going to be set, which turned out to be the case. The final positions were: 1. Steve Stubbs in a RS700; 2. Dave Edwards and Chris Mackay in a 49er; 3. Dan Jackson in a RS700; 4. David Evans and Ricky in a 29er; 5. Rolly Squibbs and Alex Donald in a Redwing; 6. David Morgan in a Laser EPS; 7. Robert Dangerfield in a Tasar. Steve Stubbs acquired the Commander Lock Trophy for his first position. Well done Steve. The round Caldey race is obviously a popular event. One competitor, flying back from Hong Kong, radioed ahead so that his dinghy was ready for action on his arrival. Such is the attraction of the venue that sailors move 'heaven and earth' to take part. The prize-giving took place on Sunday afternoon with almost all competitors attending, such was the interest. Prizes were given by Madame Commodore Jane Brace and in his address, Commodore Rolly Squibbs thanked all for taking part and all who had made the weekend so successful. Overall winner, Steve Stubbs, also thanked all who had attended and hoped all would return next year. Any sailing event is dependent on the goodwill and services of several members. Many thanks to all who manned the safety boats and committee boat, especially to Blake Shaw as race officer. A huge thank you to Terry Evans for his usual mouth-watering BBQ and a special thanks to Ruth Tebbutt and her entourage for manning the gallery on both days. Without Ruth, starvation would have been a problem! Thanks also to Jane Brace, Royce Thomas, Terry Evans and Colin Griffith for taking entries and working out results, always an arduous task with so many different classes. All agreed the weekend was a tremendous success, with the competitors unanimously agreeing that Tenby is an excellent sailing venue. Things are back to normal with sailing as usual this Sunday. The Wednesday turnout continues to be very encouraging with all enjoying Terry Evans' BBQ as usual. On top of Wednesday's junior sail training, the club is running a 'complete novice' course for juniors. This is proving very popular, with principal instructor Blake Shaw, assisted by Terry Evans and Paula May, putting these youngsters through their paces. The next session will be on Thursday, July 10 - participants please note. Finally, anyone interested in joining this vibrant club should contact any member for further details. We look forward to meeting you. GP14 |
