Last weekend's Open Meeting was a great success. The expected entry materialised, with sailors from as far as the Isle of Wight taking part. Saturday saw three races back to back. Race officer Blake Shaw assisted by Mark Dashfield had their work cut out, with the wind shifting by 180° throughout the day. The consequences of the several wind shifts were felt by the mark layers who had the responsibility of changing the course in keeping with the conditions. The sailors also had to 'be on their toes' in reading the wind and tide to their advantage. All agreed the day had been challenging, but fulfilling. Sunday's format was the same, but the wind strength much lighter, at least initially, than Saturday. By the third race the wind had increased significantly, which suited boats such as the Moths and Redwings. Blake Shaw had fewer decisions to make than the previous day, much to the relief of the mark layers. All the races were keenly contested, with some being separated by just one second, especialy the leading contenders. There was unanimous agreement that the weekend had been extremely enjoyable and worthwhile. There follows a summary of the results: Saturday: 1st overall Colin Newman in a Moth (Draycote Sailing Club). Sunday: 1st overall (joint) Martin Harrison in a Moth (Royal Victoria Yacht Club); Mike Stace and Deanna Morton in a Redwing (Tenby Sailing Club). Overall results for the two days: 1. Martin Harrison in a Moth (Royal Victoria Yacht Club); 2. Colin Newman in a Moth (Draycote Sailing Club); 3. Mike Stace and Deanna Morton (Tenby Sailing Club); 4. David Morgan in a Laser EPS (Llangorse); 5. Ben Jones and David Thorpe in a 505 (Tenby Sailing Club); 6. Robert Dangerfield in a Tasar (Llangorse). The activities off the water also went down very well The galley crew surpassed themselves, ensuring that all competitors and helpers were fully fed. Many thanks in particular to Julia Dashfield, Ruth Tebbutt and Karen Morris for giving so freely of their time. On a culinary note, it goes without saying that Saturday's Barbecue went down a treat. Barbecue King, Terry Evans, did not disappoint. Finally, a big thank you to the beach masters, Dave Morgan and Mike Tebbutt, to all the safety boat helms and crews and to the committee boat members for all their efforts. It takes a great deal of time and commitment by a large number of members to ensure the success of any event. Again many thanks to all who contributed. Sailing as usual this Sunday, with the race starting at 11 a.m. prompt. Wednesday Sailing TrainingWhilst the open meeting was in full flow, several of our youngsters travelled to Pembrokeshire Water Sports to take part in a beginners course. The light wind added to the enthusiasm of these potential sailors who will now progress with confidence. Once these series of weekends are completed, it is hoped they will continue to persevere by attending the club's Wednesday training sessions which are now underway, Trainees should turn up at 5.30 p.m. - we look forward to training you. Adult Sail TrainingOn May 19th, 20th and 21st, the club is holding its annual 'come and try' series of evenings for adults who would like to experience the thrill of sailing, The senior instructor informs me that no previous experience is necessary, Any adult wishing to participate in this course, free of charge, should contact Blake Shaw on 842535 for further details, What have you got to loose - have a go! Jazz BandTomorrow (Saturday) evening, commencing at approximately 8.15 p.m., the talented Greenhill Jazz Band will be entertaining members and friends. These enthusiastic musicians always put on a great show, led by Neil Martin. Neil informs me that this is their first public engagement this year and several new pieces are included in their programme. Why not come down and enjoy good music and a convivial atmosphere? Club steward, Howard Ball will be catering tomorrow, which makes it all the more reason to visit the club. Howard is also catering this evening, which will please the Friday gorgers and the members of the fleet of cruisers, who will be participating in this evening's race which commences at 6 p.m. Rowing RegattaOn Sunday, May 16th, the club is hosting a regatta with a difference. Rowers from far and wide will be competing in long boats for several trophies and honours. Last year, this proved to be a very successful and colourful event, with a very large entry. The club anticipates the same this year. GP14 |
