At last the sailing season has' started. Last Sunday a large turnout enjoyed the first outing, albeit with very little wind. With the wind varying between force 0 to 1 and a strong tidal race, it was always going to be reliant on local knowledge and tactics. The usual tussle at the start saw Mark Dashfield 'speed' off ahead of the fleet. Indeed, he led into the second mark, literally! He blamed the conflicting conditions for the collision - oh yeah! Whilst Mark was negotiating his 360o penalty, Rolly Squibbs took over the lead for the next two legs, but stalled in mysterious conditions, only to see Mike Stace zoom past to gain eventual first place. This race was the aquine equivalent of the Brazilian Grand Prix. The final 1-2-3 was: 1. Mike Stace and Deanna Marton in a Redwing; 2. Rolly Squibbs and Alex MacDonald in a Redwing; 3. Mark Dashfield and John Beamish in a RS400. Many thanks to the race management of Ed Dashfield, Johnsey and Rolly Evans, who set a fine course which suited the conditions. Whilst in an accolade mood, one of our juniors, Tommy D'Ortez, is making a name for himself in junior Welsh sailing circles. Over 40 Toppers competed in the final combined regional race training event which saw Tommy gaining second place overall. This is no mean achievement considering the standard of junior sailing in Wales. Well done Tommy, more of the same please! Sailing as usual this Sunday, gathering at 10 am for an 11 am prompt start. What news of the divine GPI4, I hear you ask? The helm is presently on a small vacation, but assures us that its triumphant return is imminent. Watch this space! The racing calendar for the season has been published and will be distributed with the next newsletter which is presently being compiled. There's also a limited number of these racing calendars available at the club. The imminent events, both sailing and social, are: Saturday, April 12 - Mexican evening.
