RIB (Rescue Boat) Challenge success for young sailing duoThe first ever Welsh Yachting Association Honda RIB final took place on August 30th at Llangors Lake during the WYA/PGL regatta. The Honda RIB Challenge presents an opportunity for youth and juniors to compete against similar age groups through process of heats. The winners from each age group move on to the next heat; club heat, regional final, Welsh national final and UK national final. The competition emphasises boat handling, not simply speed, in order to accomplish what is a highly technical course, including a tight slalom, a reverse around mark and the picking-up of a man overboard. Training was also the focus of the club heats, which produced some closely fought and high standards at the regional finals. Four regional winners from South and West Wales (the North Wales winners were unable to make the date), representing the under 13 and under 16 age groups, met at Llangors to battle it out. Jonathon Lewis (15) and James North (12) from Tenby and Saundersfoot Sailing Clubs were victorious over the Mumbles pair of Daniel Evans and Nathan Pain, in what was a nervously contested final, with less than 15 seconds separating the best times of both age categories. With the winning prize a RIB for the club, Jonathan and James are wished good luck as the Wales representatives at the Southampton Boat Show in a fortnight. They will be battling it out against all the other home countries and regions during the show. Get down there and give them your support! |
