Last Friday saw a fleet of eager cruiser helms and crew take to the water. After deliberating a while, the course was set, which included a spinnaker leg on three occasions. This meant the foredeck crews had to be on their toes, especially at the marks. The race was keenly contested, with helms in particular having to make vital decisions to take on board the strong tide and diminishing wind. Indeed, an error concerning the strength of the tide cost one boat a place! When all the handicaps had been taken into account, the final positions were: 1. Slipstream (Blake Shaw); 2. Tejeda (John Griffiths); 3. Sapphire (Rolly Squibbs). Angelo's first winAngelo is still celebrating a major coup. Last Sunday's racing was notable due to the lack of wind. All boats drifted to the start line which was crossed in both directions by some helms. What wind was available was obviously picked up by Angelo Fecci in his Topper. Relative to the other helms and crews, Angelo's diminutive stature also played a major part in this historic victory. Eventually, the boats crossed the finishing line, much to the relief of race officer Rolly Squibbs, who must have wondered whether the race would ever finish, even on a short course! I'm delighted to report that Angelo took the honours by just 12.2 seconds! Well done Angelo - the senior fleet had better watch out in future. The final positions were: 1. Angelo Fecci (Topper); 2. Mike Stace and Deanna Morton (Redwing); 3. Dave Bowen and Helen Williams (Redwing). I hear through the grapevine that Daniel Jackson has achieved notable success on the Haven. A full report next week - watch this space. Adult Sail TrainingThis popular series of training evenings takes place next week commencing on Wednesday, May 19th, going through to Friday, May 21st.
