Last weekend there was a buzz with excitement as Tenby Sailing Club hosted the Laser World Qualifiers. Almost 100 boats signed on to take part in a qualifying event for the forthcoming World Championships. Wind and sea conditions were ideal for these highly skilled sailors, much to the relief of principal race officer, Blake Shaw. Five races were held overall, three on Saturday and two on Sunday. Such was the competitiveness of the top sailors that only one point separated the top two places. The final positions were: 1. Paul Goodison from Ulley Sailing Club; 2. Ed Wright from Bay of Colwyn Sailing Club; 3. Jim Taylor from Hastings Sailing Club. The first three sailors came from clubs which spanned the country. In fact, the entire fleet reflected this fact, which is a great advertisement for Tenby and its reputation as a sailing venue. All the competitors agreed that the sailing was superb and the race management exemplary. Again it was a testimony to Tenby's race management skills, headed by Blake Shaw and assistant Mark Dashfield. Julia Dashfield and her entourage also had a busy weekend, ensuring that the competitors and club members were well fed throughout. All agreed that the galley crew had surpassed themselves and looked forward to further culinary delights. Many thanks to Julia for her unstinting efforts over the weekend. The success of the weekend was down to team work of which Tenby can be proud. Without the time given by many club members and friends, an event such as this could not take place. Again, many thanks to all. During this week the club has been running 'Come and Try' evenings, where anyone can try their hand at sailing. The response has been encouraging so far. There is still an opportul1ity this (Friday) evening and tomorrow (Saturday) evening for potential sailors to have a go. Contact Blake Shaw on 842535 for further details - it's free! On the social scene, life goes on. This evening the club is hosting the Greenhill School PTA, who are holding an Auction of Promises with a large number of promises on offer. This is open to all, so why not come down and enjoy a fun evening, while at the same time supporting Greenhill PTA. Proceedings begin at 7.30 pm for an 8pm start. Tomorrow evening, the club is putting on its second barbecue of the season, with chef, Terry Evans, putting on his usual steaks etc. Why not enjoy good wholesome food in warm convivial surroundings. We look forward to feeding you. Looking further ahead, there follows a summary of key dates: Saturday, May 31 - Open evening for youngsters to start sailing. Parents should come along as well. Saturday and Sunday, June 28 and 29 - Tenby Regatta and Round Caldey Race, Barbecue on Saturday evening. Week of July 26 to August 1 - Scorpion National Championships at Tenby. As well as the above events it is hoped to acquire the services of the talented Greenhill Jazz Band sometime in June or July. Watch this space. Also the Wednesday barbecues will commence on Wednesday, May 28, weather and temperature permitting. These will continue until September, again weather permitting. Finally, anyone who is interested in joining this warm and friendly club should contact any club member who will be delighted to furnish you with further information. We look forward to meeting you. |
