Sunday sailing had great significance. It was the first time this season that the Divine GP14 took to the water. Its presence must have had an inspiring effect on members who turned out in droves. On such a beautiful morning it was breathtaking to see so many starting the race. Race officer Daniel Jackson set a course in keeping with the superb conditions, which certainly suited Terry Evans and crew Jane Brace in the Divine GP14. Initially the boats kept in fairly close formation, but Ted Lewis in his Phantom soon drew away, as did Steve in his Laser 2000 and Mike Stace in his Redwing. The minor places changed several times during the race, with the final positions being: 1. Ted Lewis (phantom); 2. Steve and Matt (Laser 2000); 3. Mike Stace and Deanna Morton (Redwing); 4. Terry Evans and Jane Brace (Divine GP14). The president of the Divine GP14 Appreciation Society will be delighted at this result after such a long layoff. Terry informs me that with some fine tuning the Divine will, once more, become a major threat to the regular fleet. Is this a challenge? Sailing is proving very popular on Wednesdays, with several juniors participating in the sail training, as well as the newly recruited adults. It's very encouraging to see so many wanting to learn to sail - the main fleet had better be aware that there are some very competent sailors coming through! Sailing as normal this Sunday and Wednesday. Passage RaceTomorrow (Saturday) sees the annual Hobbs Point to Tenby Passage Race. This is an event for the local cruising fraternity to take part in a race of a longer nature. It regularly attracts several yachts which moor up at Tenby, thereby enhancing the already spectacular North Bay area. The participants will be treated to Terry Evans's legendary barbecue and some fine 'lemonade' served by our other culinary wizard, Howard Ball. RegattaThe club's annual regatta will take place on the weekend of July 3rd and 4th. This is always a popular event split into two sections. Saturday sees the usual daytime racing, followed by the evening's popular pursuit race based on handicap. Sunday's circumnavigation of Caldey is always popular, with the record being held by Dave Edwards in the 49er. The club is expecting a good turnout from far and wide. More towards the event. Jazz BandThe social scene continues to flourish. By popular demand the club has acquired the services of the talented Greenhill Jazz Band on Saturday, June 26th. Their last visit proved a great success, well supported by members and friends. I'm informed by leader, Neil Martin, that a few new numbers are being worked on. We look forward with eager anticipation to a feat evening of music and good food prepared by chef extraordinaire Howard Ball. Cruise in CompanyWhile on the social scene, members may like to think ahead to Sunday, July 18th, when the annual Flotilla Day Cruise In Company takes place. This is a very popular event combining the social side with the sailing - more of the venue later. Watch this space. GP14 |
