Yet another drift with little or no wind was the frustrating conditions which the large Sunday morning fleet had to contend with. All boats eventually crossed the start line, but all finished as stemming the tide became increasingly difficult as the wind dropped to nothing. Those who made the third mark could use the tide to finish, with the remainder forced to retire. The final 1-2-3-4 was: 1. Ted Lewis in a Phantom; 2. Mike Stace and Deanna Morton in a Redwing; 3. Angelo Fecci in a Topper; 4. Tommy O'Ortez in a Laser Radial. The wind increased slightly in the evening, which meant the scheduled cruiser race could take place. The battle for second place became frantic in the wake of leader John Griffiths. After 'stealing' Blake Shaw's wind, Chris Lawrence squeezed past on the final leg to take second spot. To add to the fun of the evening the helms decided to repeat the race in reverse. This time the roles were reversed, with Blake Shaw pipping Chris Lawrence for second place, again behind John Griffiths. Rowing RegattaWhat a superb spectacle. Long boat rowers from all over the country gathered in Tenby for their regatta. With conditions perfect, and the tide in, the public were treated to a feast of furious contests, often going to the wire. The fitness of these rowers must be admired, with competitors taking part in several races of quite some length. All agreed the event had been a spectacular success. Many thanks to all who contributed to the event, especially race officer Rolly Squibbs, the galley crew of Julia Dashfield and Karen Morris and, of course BBQ king Terry Evans. Terry is also very grateful for the help of Julia and Karen, who faced some stressful moments, but smiled through it all. Haven SuccessAs mentioned last week, things have been happening on the Haven. Billy Stubbs in Amphora has been successful in division three in both the Sunday and Wednesday series. At this moment, Billy lies in fourth place in the Wednesday series and fifth in the Sunday series. In division two, Daniel Jackson in Enigma has sewn up proceedings. As far as I understand, Daniel has won both series, which is a notable achievement considering the age and experience of the fleet. We congratulate Daniel and Billy for flying the Tenby colours so well. Wednesday TrainingThis is gaining momentum, with juniors reaping the benefit of experienced instructors, such as Nick Berridge, Mark Dashfield and Blake Shaw. Should any junior wish to participate in these sessions, please contact Blake Shaw on 842535 for further details. After the training there will be a points race - senior members please note. Also there's the added attraction of Terry Evans's world famous BBQ. Quiz EveningNext Thursday, May 26th, there will be a quiz in aid of the Greenhill Canadian rugby tour. All are welcome, so why not tease your brain cells in aid of a worthy cause. There will be food served to the ravenous -what more could you need on a spring Thursday evening. Quiz master, Terry Evans, informs me that the questions will be 'light' in nature. Finally, anyone interested in joining this warm and friendly club should contact any member for further details. We look forward to meeting you. GP14 |
