Members of the club were shocked and saddened to hear of the tragic death of long-time member David Thomas. David always enjoyed sailing and was also more than willing to help the club in any way he could. Only this summer he'd worked tirelessly on the safety boats at the National Scorpion championships and his help at their barbecue was invaluable. His sailing exploits were well-known, especially in his GP14, the Black Pig, and some spectacular capsizes at Redwing championships. Nevertheless, he never gave in and always finished the race - perhaps the expression 'nil desperandum' was written for David. He will be sorely missed by us all and our thoughts are with his father Owen at this sad time. Club sailing has attracted the usual band of enthusiastic mariners. Last Wednesday's race was keenly contested with the Redwings of Mike Stace and Rolly Squibbs engaged in a tight battle, with the final positions being: 1. Mike Stace and Deanna Morton (Redwing); 2. Rolly Squibbs and Jane Brace (Redwing); 3. Ted Lewis (Phantom). Sunday's racing took place in a stiff easterly breeze and a very loppy sea which 'put off' the re-launch of the divine GPI4, much to the relief of the other participants. Conditions were such that part of Deanna Morton's wetsuit decided to come apart on the high seas - a sight to behold! After several close tussles, the final positions were: 1. Mike Stace and Deanna Morton (Redwing); 2. Rolly Squibbs and Alan Lambert (Redwing); 3. Alistair MacKay (Redwing). The club wishes the Redwing fleet good luck and fair sailing in the National Championships at Fishguard next week. Finally, a word of thanks to Gwen and Mark Home for hosting the Redwing helms and crew who took part in Angle Regatta, a gesture much appreciated. GP14 |
