Tenby Sailing Club Race Results & Social Events.

Friday 24th September 2004

Last Wednesday saw one of the best turnouts of the season with a large trainee fleet again showing principal instructor, Blake Shaw, how they have progressed over the summer.

The racing section were delighted by the return of the divine GP14, helmed by legendary Barbecue King Terry Evans and his novice crew, colleague Calvin Williams - several of the more experienced helms expressed concerns about the divine's 'unorthodox' mannerism at the start line. The concerns were unfounded as no boat was rammed by the aforementioned GP14 - in fact, 'the divine' made an excellent start but, alas, was soon overtaken.

The race was keenly contested, with a few private battles taking place between the Redwings and the Asymmetric and the Wayfarers and the GP14s, respectively. The final 1-2-3 was:

          1. Rolly Squibbs and Alex MacDonald in a Redwing; 2. Nick Berridge in a Phantom; 3. Mike Stace and Deanna Morton in a Redwing.

Terry Evans is very grateful to Karen Morris for her major contribution to the success of last Wednesday's award-winning barbecue. Sunday's racing again saw a large turnout, with conditions in contrast to Wednesday's. The Redwings fared very well, taking the first two places, with a Phantom taking the third podium place. The final 1-2-3 was:

          1. Rolly Squibbs and Alex MacDonald in a Redwing; 2. Mike Stace and Deanna Morton in a Redwing; 3. Ted Lewis in a Phantom.

Sunday was also a very successful day for our vice-commodore, Daniel Jackson. Daniel, along with crew Neil Roberts, James and Rhian Bruce, took part in the annual P.H.Y.C. R.N.L.I. Trophy race run on the Haven. In his newly-acquired Hunter Delta 25, named Artful Dodger, Daniel sailed in the division 1 class. In blustery conditions, with gusts exceeding force 6, Daniel completed the race in an excellent time of just under two hours. I'm delighted to report that this was indeed a winning performance, which considering the opposition and having to come to terms with the foibles of a new boat, was no mean achievement. Daniel now looks forward to the winter series, commencing on October 3rd, as do other members of the club. Watch this space!

The social programme, as mentioned last week, is being drawn up at this moment and will be included in the next newsletter. One important date which members should note - the annual dinner and prize-giving is on Saturday, November 20th.

We have joined the Town Darts League this year - the first match is imminent, so watch this space. Practice is now compulsory - captain Terry Evans has great expectations this year.

Howard is still 'pulling them in' on Fridays and Saturdays - why not come along and enjoy great food in warm and convivial surroundings. He looks forward to feeding you.
