A large turnout enjoyed the conditions last Sunday. Unfortunately, I do not have the results to hand. I will report the final positions in next week's literary epic. Junior TrainingAs mentioned in recent articles, a group of juniors attended Pembrokeshire Watersports for two weekends of sailing tuition funded by the Welsh Assembly to encourage children to take up water activities. Most of the youngsters successfully completed the course which led to awards of RYA level I and 2 certificates. The following children participated: Sam Baxter, Hattie D'Ortez, Oliver Haran Jones, Conor Keohane, Kirk Lester, Clara Hester, Hannah Lowe, Matthew May, Ciaran Murray-Coller, Jonathan Morris, Jack Murphy, Jack Waring (those who could be 'rounded up' are shown in the photograph). The children thoroughly enjoyed the courses and we look forward to seeing their newly found skills at Tenby. Please note the sail training in Optimists has been fixed for Thursday, June 17th and Monday, June 21st, with further dates to be arranged. Please turn up at 5.30 p.m. Adult TrainingThe uptake was extremely encouraging with 25 adults taking part over the evenings of Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, May 19th, 20th, 21st, respectively. Wednesday's conditions were ideal for introducing complete beginners to the joys of sailing. So good were the conditions that all the trainees were helming with confidence by the end of the evening. There were occasional maritime pirouettes with some helms turning through 360 in spectacular fashion. Thursday's conditions were much stronger and, with a strong N/NE wind, the instructors had their work cut out, but I'm delighted to report no capsizes which is a testament to the trainees' resolve. Friday's conditions were slightly less than Thursday's which again tested the skills of both instructor and trainee. During the three sessions various types of craft were used ranging from a Topper to a cruiser. A series of evenings such as these do not happen without the services of a large number of people freely giving of their time. Many thanks to all who helped. The success of the event was such that several of the trainees are keen to continue, which has delighted club members. As well as enjoying the sailing, the trainees and instructors were treated to the world famous Terry Evans Barbecue and Howard Ball's legendary Friday gourmet delights. All part of the service. Sailing as usual this Sunday, gathering at 10 a.m. for an 11 a.m. prompt start. The Wednesday sail training is gaining momentum, so much so that some parental help would be appreciated. After the training session a points race will take place - instructors and members please note. The usual Wednesday BBQ is another reason to attend. Finally, anyone interested in joining this warm and friendly club should contact any member for further details. GP14 |
