Sailing of sorts did take place last Sunday. All the boats eventually crossed the starting line only to be thwarted by the complete disappearance of any wind. Nil desperandum, sailing as normal in two weeks time. Why not this weekend? Read on. Open MeetingDuring tomorrow (Saturday) and Sunday, the club is holding its annual open meeting. This is always a popular event attracting sailors from far and wide. Tomorrow sees three races being held back to back with the first race commencing at 12 noon. Sunday's racing takes on a similar format commencing at 11 am. Competitors are asked to register at the club as early as possible tomorrow morning. To cater for the ravenous, there will be snacks available throughout the two days including Terry Evans' world famous barbecue, commencing at approximately 6 p.m. tomorrow evening. An event such as this does not happen overnight. Meticulous planning and preparation is required. This inevitably falls on a few key members who always give of their time. If anyone can 'give a hand', please contact Rolly Squibbs on 842170 for further details. Come and Try EveningsBy popular demand, the club is again holding an adult sailing course over the evenings of May 19th, 20th and 21st. If anyone is interested in this free of charge course for adult beginners, they should contact Blake Shaw on 842535 for further details. Previous courses have resulted in several sailing recruits, let's us hope the trend continues. Blake assures me that no experience is necessary to embark on the course, so why not have a go? Junior SuccessAs mentioned in last week's article, two of our junior members, Anglo Fecci and Tommy D'Ortez, travelled to Pwllheli to take part in Inter Regional finals and senior youth finals respectively. I am delighted to report that Angelo finished 13th in the junior topper finals, while Tommy finished 15th in the senior laser finals. Considering the size of both fields these two lads achieved formidable success. Congratulations to you both! Club Race OfficersLast Sunday, the club's senior race officers Blake Shaw and Mark Dashfield ran a course for budding club race officers. The attendance was very high with 18 of Tenby's members taking part and eight from Saundersfoot. Many thanks to Blake and Mark for their effort. Both clubs have benefited greatly from their expertise. Junior Sail trainingThis weekend, 12 of our younger members will be taking part in a beginners course run by Pembrokeshire Water Sports. Encouraged by Blake Shaw, these youngsters will learn the rudiments of sailing which will stand them in good stead when they attend the club's sail training on Wednesday evenings. Social SceneThe social scene continues to flourish. Friday's obligatory darts practice was dominated by an in-form captain, Terry Evans. Terry also prepared sumptuous food for the Friday gorgers. I'm delighted to report that Howard Ball's culinary skills have not diminished over the winter recess. Members were treated to good wholesome food on Saturday evening. Howard informs me that, given sufficient notice and demand, Sunday lunches are a distinct possibility. Watch this space. While on the subject of food, Terry Evans Wednesday barbecues begin next Wednesday, May 5th, weather permitting. He looks forward to feeding you. Jazz EveningGreat news! The club is pleased to acquire the services of the very talented Greenhill Jazz Band. They have agreed to perform at the club on Saturday, May 8th. Don't miss this opportunity to hear this group of youngsters. Proceedings begin at 8.30 p.m. As well as great music, there will be food available, prepared by club steward Howard Ball. What more could you want? Good food with great entertainment. Finally, anyone wishing to join this dynamic club should contact any member who will be delighted to pass on further information. We look forward to meeting you. GP14 |
