Thomas Sleeman, twice Mayor of Tenby.




The Sleeman's Stores lease.

          Thomas Sleeman took out a lease on Sleeman's Stores in 1825 when the new building, described as being 56 ft by 24 ft, was already under construction. The lease was for three lives or 60 years, and the rent was fixed at 10 shillings per year, payable in two instalments on Lady Day (March 25th) and Michaelmas (September 29th). The lease mentions three children: Thomas, Elizabeth and Harry. The lease is dated 15th September 1825.




Pigot's Directory of 1835.

          Thomas Sleeman was Mayor of Tenby in 1832 and again in 1844. In Pigot's Directory of 1835, he is listed as a Wine & Spirit Merchant and General Merchant.




The Census of 1851.

The ocupants of a property in St. Julian's Street are described as:

  • Thomas Sleeman, a widower, aged 69, no occupation, originally from Newbury in Berkshire.

  • A fourth child Mary Sleeman, daughter, unmarried, aged 28, also with no occupation, from Tenby.

  • Mary Morgan, Sister-in-Law, unmarried, aged 61, also with no occupation, from Tenby.

  • Priscilla Phillips, Servant, unmarried, aged 23, from Jeffreston.

  • George Morris, Servant, unmarried, aged 18, from Pembroke.



An entry in St. Mary the Virgin, Tenby, Church records:

XXXIX.
          In memory of Thomas Sleeman, Esquire, Justice of the Peace, and twice Mayor of this Borough, in which he resided nearly half a century, greatly respected by all classes of his fellow townsmen. He was born at Newbury, Berks, A.D. 1781, and died at Tenby Feb. 9, A.D. 1855, aged 74 years. Also in memory of Elizabeth, the beloved wife of the above. She was born at Bristol, 1780, and died at Tenby April 23. A.D. 1847, aged 67 years. "If we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them that sleep in Jesus shall God bring with Him." - I. Thess. iv. 14. This tablet is erected by their four surviving children in testimony of their affection for parents who are as sincerely lamented in death as they were beloved and respected in life.
